    For product & engineering teams

A VIN field is only the starting point.

    • Manual vehicle entry creates repetitive work and inconsistent specification descriptions.
    • A generic model label cannot explain the factory configuration recorded for a particular VIN.
    • Translated descriptions need their original codes and source wording preserved for review.
    • Missing fields must stay unknown rather than becoming misleading equipment flags or invented trim names.

    VINdata.io

Six places to add a factory-data layer

    Enrich vehicle intake

Request available records when a VIN enters your inventory or vehicle file. Present returned identity fields for review before using them in your own product.

    Preserve structured source records

Keep raw option codes, descriptions and available original wording as a distinct factory-data layer. Do not merge them silently with customer declarations or inspection findings.

    Build specification views

Display a clearly labelled factory-record section in inventory or vehicle detail screens. Keep unavailable fields unknown and allow staff to review descriptions before customer-facing publication.

    Support multilingual products

Request available translated equipment descriptions using the documented language parameter, such as lang=de or lang=it. Preserve codes and original wording; translations do not establish equipment presence.

    Give service teams context

Surface recorded configuration beside your own customer and service records. Use it for background questions, not diagnostics, repair instructions or a parts-compatibility guarantee.

    Integrate through API & MCP

Build your own API connection for production workflows, or evaluate returned records in a compatible MCP assistant. Your team owns credential protection, field mapping, presentation and error handling.

A real cached Volkswagen Passat report with 203 factory records. These selected original entries show what your team can review. This is an example, not a live lookup; coverage and available fields vary by VIN.

Descriptions above are original source records in English. They are not AI-generated equipment flags. Factory lists can include technical entries, duplicates and explicit exclusions; coverage and detail vary by manufacturer and VIN.

Missing is not the same as absent

“Without trailer hitch” is an explicit factory record. An option that is simply missing from the response remains unknown. Neither case confirms the current vehicle’s configuration without inspection.

    AI & integrations

From evaluation to your own integration

Test representative VINs and inspect the documented response before mapping fields. Evaluate raw records in an assistant, then build your production connection with protected credentials.

    MCP for AI assistants

Connect a compatible assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT to https://mcp.vindata.io/api/public/mcp using your approved API key. Retrieve and organise the returned factory records for human review. Do not infer missing equipment, guess a model or replace a physical inspection.

    REST API

Use the documented REST API to request records in your own product. Keep API keys protected and preserve raw codes, descriptions and unknown fields. Access requires approval; free accounts have three successful lifetime trial calls in total, shared across keys, with no monthly reset or expiry. Website quotas are separate.

    See API documentation

A factory-data API, not an all-in-one vehicle engine.

No universal DMS connector, parts catalogue, diagnostic engine, damage or history check, valuation or current-equipment verification is included. Coverage and returned fields vary by manufacturer and VIN. Do not infer equipment flags or vehicle models from missing or ambiguous input, and do not let an assistant invent a configuration.

    Plans for automotive software teams

Evaluate coverage with approved API access, then discuss production volume and enterprise requirements. Your developers implement the integration. Website plans and API quotas are separate; ordinary accounts do not have website bulk lookup.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a plug-in for every DMS or inventory system?

No. VINdata provides an API for your own integration. Your developers implement field mapping, authentication, display rules and error handling in the system you use.

Does the API return verified yes/no equipment flags?

No. Use the raw option codes and descriptions. Compatibility booleans remain null rather than inferred true or false; missing records remain unknown.

    Can we request translated descriptions?

Use the documented language parameter, for example lang=de or lang=it, for available translated equipment descriptions. Keep the original records and codes for review. Translation does not change what the factory record establishes.

Should API keys be embedded in our public frontend?

No. Protect credentials in your own server-side integration and avoid exposing them to customers or public code. Consult the API documentation and test how your application handles missing data and failed requests.

How can we test coverage for our vehicles?

Apply for API access and test representative VINs from the makes, ages and markets you work with. Free accounts receive three successful API trial calls in total, shared across keys, with no monthly reset or expiry date. Contact support@vindata.io if your evaluation needs a larger agreed sample.
